History

The roots of Boissevain Co-op can be traced back to 1942, it was in that year that a Co-op was opened in the community of Whitewater located west of Boissevain.  It was in 1947 that Boissevain Consumers Co-operative  amalgamated with Whitewater Co-op to form the Co-operative you see today.

Stepping back a few years it was June 1945 when a group of enthusiastic people got together and started the wheels in motion to form a consumer owned Co-operative in Boissevain.  Several meetings were held to consider ideas then a door to door campaign was launched to sign up members.   By March 1946  there were about 150 members signed up.

The first store was opened in April 1946, (the Co-op was incorporated on August 18th, 1945) in the Brooks building located on Main Street.  In the first year of operation Boissevain Co-op offered it's members petroleum products, feeds, small hardware and flour.  When the first year of operations had finished the Co-op had sales of $39,646 with savings of $1,803.

Creditied with piloting the new Association was the first Board of Directors, Alex Cochrane, President, W.A Latimer, Ed Pettypiece, Robert Ekin, Stan Hart, Jack McCallum and S.E Ransom.  It was also agreed that Whitewater Co-op had provided much inspiration.

Through the years Boissevain Co-op expanded and moved several times finally settling in the locations you see today.
